LAKE BORUMBA FISH STOCKING ASSOCIATION INC

Queensland, Australia

The Lake Borumba Story

Construction of the dam commenced in 1961 and was completed in August 1964. Around 1966/1968 the Mary Valley Fish Replenishment Committee was formed and, with the help of local Councilor George Burtenshaw, lobbied the State Government to raise money to stock the lake. In 1968 Hamer Midgely through the State Government introduced the first batch of "saratoga". This species has adapted so successfully that there is now a self sustaining population with some recorded fish reaching over a metre in length.

In 1970 the lake was further stocked with a mix of about 4000 golden and silver perch fingerlings. Also in 1972, 700 rainbow trout were added however there has not been any ever caught or sighted.

State Parliament member, Hon. Max Hodges, prior to his retirement, was instrumental in the construction of a hatchery at the site. The plan included a fish display to promote tourism and educate school groups on fish breeding practices. Construction was commenced in 1980 under the guidance of the Department of Harbours and Marine. The aim of the hatchery was to supply fingerlings to stock South East Queensland waterways particularly the Mary River system. After successfully breeding golden perch that were stocked into the dam and other locations, the hatchery had problems with water quality and suitable breeding stock. All these issues had a bearing on the decision to close the hatchery. By the mid to late eighties the operation of the hatchery passed over to the local Shire Council and was operated with funding from the Shire and the the State Government.

The Borumba Fishing Club was formed in 1991 with the main purpose to continue the stocking program. Initially the Club purchased Australian Bass and Mary River Cod and the Council supplied Golden and Silver Perch raised at the hatchery. In early 1999, the Club took over the the running of the hatchery however the breeding activities ceased a short time later because of economic viability reasons.

In July 2005, the Club name was changed to the Lake Borumba Fish Stocking Association Inc to better reflect the purpose of the club and its activities.

Club Activities

To assist research programs to gain a better understanding of fish movement, growth and survival rates, the Club has an active tagging program. All members are encouraged to participate in the tag and release program supervised by the Club. The information gained assists greatly in the management of the resource.

The Club meets one weekend each month.....usually the third. The activities for the following year are decided on in December and comprise of one month at Borumba and alternate months at an "away" destination. A general meeting is held at the conclusion of fishing on the Borumba weekends and the AGM is held in September.

At each Club weekend, points are awarded for fish caught on Saturday and Sunday, meeting and outing attendance. Overall club champions both female and male as well as juniors in both categories are determined by points at the end of the year.
