Stocking Information

At present the permit from the Queensland Department of Fisheries allows the introduction of the following fingerlings each year:

Murray-Darling Golden Perch      34,000

Australian Bass                       39,900

Silver Perch                            25,000

Mary River Cod                         1,000

The Lake Borumba Fish Stocking Association has recently released the latest total for the stocking of this popular recreational “put and take” fishery that at present is full with a capacity of 46,000 megalitres and covers an area of about 500 hectares.

Don Robertson, Stocking Representative for the Association said that, “For the period 1996 to 2008, the records indicate that a total of over 688,000 fingerlings, comprised of 323,700 Australian Bass, 209,500 Golden Perch, 146.500 Silver Perch and 9,500 Mary River Cod have been released into the impoundment. The majority, approximately 9000, of the endangered and protected Mary River Cod were introduced in the 2002 to 2005 period. A lack of available cod fingerlings due, in the main, to the temporary closure of the Lake McDonald hatchery, has meant that further stockings have not been made. This situation should change with with the reopening of the hatchery in late 2008.”

Another popular and sought after sportfish, Saratoga, were introduced into the waters shortly after the dam was completed and there is now a self sustaining population that doesn’t require further insertion of numbers.

Funds to enable the stocking program have been provided from the Queensland Government Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme, the Gympie Regional Council, contributions from the organizers of some of the fishing competitions and fund raising by the Stocking Association.

Some of the regular competition events that attract entrants from near and far are the Variety Children’s Toga on Fly Competition, Bass on Fly Competition, Barra & Basstastic (Qualifying rounds and grand final for bass), Anaconda Mini Bucks Shootout as well as the ABT Grand Final in 2006, Mega Bucks and The Bass Pro Qualifier.

The quality of the fishing and facilities both at the dam itself and at the nearby Deer Park has established Borumba as a well known recreational fishery that attracts enthusiasts and tourists from near and far and the associated income produced provides a substantial boost for the local economy.
